Research in Physics at the University of Michigan

For more than a century, the University of Michigan has been home to a leading institution specializing in physics research and education. The U-M Physics Department has a vast array of research groups, centers, and programs. There are five main Research Groups including: Astrophysics, Atomic, Molecular, and Optical, Biophysics, Condensed Matter, Elementary Particle Physics.

The Department also participates in many Research Centers and Programs including: Applied Physics, Center for Ultrafast, Optical Science, Center for the Study of Complex Systems, Frontiers in Optical Coherent and Ultrafast Science, Michigan Center for Theoretical Physics, Optical Physics Interdisciplinary Laboratory, Space Physics and the Spin Physics Center.

The research experience ranges from theoretical and experimental research into the most fundamental questions of physics, to systematic investigations of the applications of physics principles and discoveries in a variety of fields. Theoretical and experimental faculty maintain close ties--a longstanding tradition at Michigan.

The Department encourages early, extensive participation in research, in both the graduate and undergraduate programs, and opportunities for such interaction abound. Graduate students, as well as advanced undergraduates, typically assume much responsibility in research, helping to design, fabricate, install, and test equipment; plan, propose, and execute experiments; analyze and interpret data; write conference and journal papers, and present data at meetings. Such hands-on experience has applications in many areas of scientific research and study. A Michigan physicist may also take advantage of ever increasing research opportunities outside the University at affiliated facilities and national laboratories.
