A personal window on physics
Sunday, October 26, 2003
University of Michigan physics graduate student Seth Blumberg will give three talks as part of the University of Michigan's popular Saturday Morning Physics lecture series. The free public talks start at 10:30 a.m. in 170 Dennison Hall, located at the east edge of central campus at 501 E. University Ave. For more information, visit www.physics.lsa.umich.edu or call (734) 764-4437. Selected telecasts from the series will be available later on the U-M educational access TV (UM-TV), Comcast cable channel 22 in the Ann Arbor area.
Blumberg is also completing an M.D. He has been intrigued with the physical principles involved in health and disease. He'll talk about the role of physics in understanding respiratory and circulatory diseases. Blumberg will describe his own research to learn more about how mechanical forces affect DNA's dynamic structure. He's examining how tension affects the way DNA strands form loops, a phenomenon that's closely tied to gene regulation. Many diseases, including cancer, occur when gene regulation goes awry. He'll describe how he looks for connections between his basic research and applications in medicine.
