    Undergraduate Advising

    LSA

General questions regarding degree programs and requirements can be answered by the Literature Science and Arts academic advisors. Currently, Susan TePaske-King and Mary Kate Kopec hold a limited number of office hours in 1440 Randall Lab. If you would like to schedule an appointment with Susan, Mary Kate, or any General Advisor call 764-0332.

    Physics Department

Specific questions regarding a physics degree program should be answered during a one-on-one meeting with a department concentration advisor. An advisor must approve your concentration plan before it can be filed. To make an appointment with an advisor, please use the online advising calendar. Once authenticated, you will be able to choose from all available appointment times.

The undergraduate physics concentration advisors for the 2005-2006 academic year are:

A Sequence of Studies: Start Early

Many of the required studies leading to a career in physics are sequential. If you are contemplating a career in physics, you should try to reach a decision as early as possible in order to take full advantage of early advising and education.

Credit by Examination and Credit Evaluation

Professor Mike Longo is in charge of both Credit by Exam (CBE) and Credit Evaluation. All questions regarding credit evaluation for physics courses should be directed to Professor Longo at mlongo@umich.edu.

It is possible to get credit for Physics 125, 126, 140 and 240 by exam. You must register for this examination with the Student Services Office and pay the required fee ($318). Student Services is located in 2464 Randall Lab on Central Campus.

The minimum passing grade is 70%. Note that in the past only about half of the students who attempt these exams manage to pass.

The exam is to be taken without notes of any kind. However, your answers can be written in terms of standard constants, such as g, G, etc. A pocket calculator will be provided. There are typically 15-18 questions. You should answer all of them. Write legibly. You may use pencil. You have 90 minutes to complete the exam.

CBE's are NOT multiple choice. The correct answer with no supporting calculation will receive no credit. Your solutions will be graded and you will be notified of the result. This exam can not be returned to you.

CBE's are generally similar to the midterm exams of the Physics 125, 126, 140, 240 courses and the material covered by the CBE exams is the same as that covered by the relevant courses. You may be able to find a syllabus and possibly sample midterms from the relevant course web pages.

You can set up a time to take the exam with the Physics Department Student Services Office. For further information, contact them at (734) 764-5539 or Professor Longo at mlongo@umich.edu.
