Three main organizations for students to join within the Physics Department are the local chapter of the Society for Physics Students--for undergraduates, the Graduate Experience Project-- for women engineering and physical science students, and Grad Phi--a graduate student organization.

    Society of Physics Students (SPS)

The Society of Physics Students focuses on the advancement of physics and its branches. The group sponsors regular academic and social activities for undergraduates. One of these activities is tutoring from 7-9 pm every Monday evening. They also hold biweekly meetings on Tuesday nights from 7-9 pm and invite speakers to talk about their research. Topics covered in these talks include quantum computing, current experiments, Magellan, the history of the U-M Physics Department, and more.

Another activity that takes place on a monthly basis is the SPS In-Reach program. The group invites middle school students from the Ovid-Elsie school system near East Lansing, and with the help of the Physics Department Demonstration Labs, the SPS members teach basic physics concepts. Topics of past In-Reaches include Energy, Newton's Laws, Modern Physics, waves, and others. SPS members are involved all year culminating in a physics day at Cedar Point.

This past year SPS has also toured the Ford Research Labs and the Fermi National Accelerator Lab. This year, the members of SPS hope to expand their tutoring and In-Reach programs. For more information, please view the SPS website.

    Graduate Experience Project

The UM·Sloan Graduate Experience Project is a comprehensive, university-wide initiative designed to recruit, retain, graduate, and foster the future success of women engineering and physical science students at both the Master's and PhD levels. This program is one of the first programs in the United States tailored to meet the special needs of women pursuing advanced degrees in science and engineering.

    Grad Phi

Grad Phi is the physics graduate student organization. Members hold both "official" meetings and informal social events funded by the Physics Department. Participation is completely voluntary, and there are no member dues.

The Grad Phi meetings are a forum in which to converse with comrades about life as a physics grad student. It’s also a way to meet other students in the department. First year students are especially encouraged to attend.

Meeting notices are sent by email to those on the mailing list, and posted on first year grad offices. Anyone interested in joining the mailing list should contact the Standing Committee at gp.sc@umich.edu.
