Part I:

RESEARCH:
Complete 4 credit hours of supervised, non-thesis research (Physics 515/715).
COMMITTEE: Appoint a committee to hear your prelim and to subsequently serve as your
dissertation committee.
Complete
a Physics Department Committee Nomination Form from the Office of Student Services. Upon
receipt of this form, the Office of Student Services will complete a Dissertation
Committee Form and, after your prelim, submit it to Rackham on your behalf.
PRELIM: Take and pass your Preliminary Exam.
Write a
5-10 page prospectus--including abstract and bibliography--and distribute it to the
members of your committee as well as to the Office of Student Services.
Just
prior to your prelim, pick up an Oral Examination Evaluation Form from the Office of
Student Services and take it to your prelim for the chair of your committee.
CANDIDACY: Upon receipt of both the Oral Examination Evaluation Form and your prospectus--if you have completed all of the above requirements--the Office of Student Services will complete and forward directly to Rackham the Nomination for Candidacy Form. Students are expected to achieve candidacy by the end of their third year.
