SPS Activities
Physics Palooza: In 2006 and 2007 SPS partnered with the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum and FOCUS to bring an entire weekend of physics excitement to the Hands-On Museum. We plan to repeat the performace in the spring of 2008 with some new activites (rockets?) and new talent. Want to help? Attend a regular SPS meeting or let us know at spsboard@umich.edu
In-reaches: In the 2006-2007 academic year in-reaches were put on hold so that we could throw all of our energy into Physics Palooza. This year we plan to restart the in-reach program with a few in-reaches leading up to the Palooza in winter 2008.
In-reach Dates: TBA
Tutoring:
SPS has changed the tutoring system this year for the benefit of all! We will now be holding SPS
office hours; a member can sign up for a day and time to spend in the SPS office each week, ready to help
any intro physics students that come in seeking aid.
Seminars:
SPS holds biweekly meetings with guest speakers lecturing on various topics of interest. See the homepage for a schedule.
Research Trips:
SPS occasionally sponsors trips to major physics research centers such as Argonne National Labs and Fermilab.
This year's possible trips are
currently in planning, come to the meetings to make
suggestions!
Social Events:
SPS holds many social events throughout the year, including a Haloween hayride and bonfire, and a trip to Cedar Point. Plans are in the works for a canoeing outing, rock climbing, and ice skating.
Intramural Sports:
SPS has a long history of intramural sports. In years past, the
Broomball team has been a huge success (they made the play-offs!)
and the flag football team awarded itself the Einstein
trophy!
Awards Banquet:
At the end of every year, active SPS members are treated to a free
dinner at Mongolian BBQ! To qualify as an active member, you must
participate in a certain number of in-reach, social and other events.
Requirements will be posted soon.
Volunteers are always needed to help meet our goals, and officer
positions are easily had by those willing to invest some time and
effort. If you're interested in helping out, contact the officers of
SPS. Or contact us at spsboard@umich.edu.
